Dante wasn’t sure what he wanted to do with his life, so he moved to California at the suggestion of a friend. He enrolled in classes at Sacramento City College and after finding his voice and building confidence in a public speaking course, decided he wants to be a Communications major. With tuition assistance and textbooks from DOR, Dante can focus on getting good grades.
I have a mild case of cerebral palsy; I guess it would be classified as spastic.
The whole process started when I was eighteen. I was a janitor and it was my best friend’s dad that I was being a janitor for. One day he pulled me aside and said “Dante, what are you going to do with your life?” I was like, I don’t know. He was like, well you need to do something. Have you ever thought about college? I was like, no. Because I was a class clown in high school, grades weren’t up to par, so I never thought about college.
One of my friends lived here and they offered me the opportunity to come here. I’m originally from West Virginia. He was like, “You need to go do something.” He was like, “what’s the worst that could happen?”
So, I took the opportunity, I came out here and it was one of the best decisions I’ve ever made. You have to take the opportunities at hand and make the most of it to become something because it’s all up to you trying to do something. Because if you don’t try how do you know what you’re going to become.
What I’m hoping to do is speak with kids or people I can relate to because I come from a low income family and I was able to turn it around. So, why can’t they? When you turn eighteen your story can change it’s up to them if they want to change it; because you have to have those positive people in your circle.
I’m glad I have the opportunity to use these services. They’re benefiting me to the utmost. I mean, most people that go to college can’t even afford their books and I am getting help from the DOR to not even worry about stressing over books. I’ve learned that you have to be patient and if you’re not patient you’re not going to get what you need or what you want.
You have to be patient and just wait and mark out, map out a plan. Mark some goals down and figure out how you’re going to achieve those things. And they may not work, but learn from the process because if you learn from it then you won’t make the same mistake twice.
