Kelly Ray

Kelly had just moved to Monterey to be closer to family and raise her son when she found out the pain in her hands was De Quervain’s tendinosis; preventing her from continuing her career as a massage therapist.  She decided to check out DOR to see how we could help her transition into a new career in a related field. With guidance from her counselor and tuition assistance from DOR she set her goal as a college degree in physical education, but was diagnosed with breast cancer. She put her case on hold during treatment and eventually came back ready to start courses. She was re-diagnosed her sophomore year but continued school, graduating in 2014. As she gains back her strength, she’s looking forward to the pursuing the next level.

Kelly - I’ve been with DOR since 2008. I had just relocated to this area. I was pregnant at the time. I was trying to get my feet back on the ground and noticed I was not going to be able to do the profession that I was. At the time I was a sports massage therapist.

I qualified to go in through DOR and started to do the paperwork and trying to figure out what I wanted to do and what I wanted to do was something physically active with my profession, but do it more on a physical education level.

But it was like, okay let’s get you back into school and see what we can and get you on that track. Second year, my senior year, as a transfer student I was re-diagnosed with stage two breast cancer.

So, I didn’t close my case. I actually continued and graduated in 2014.

Now I had my son, who was older, and I did it for him. I did it for myself. I did it for my mom.

So, thankfully in August of 2015, I came across a job that’s in the Live Oaks school district that I’m currently working at right now. And it’s as a recess coach.

The next goal is to pursue that next level of going back to school and figuring out how to now manage work, you know life as a parent and going back to school again.

So, that’s kind of where I’m at right now.
